First, know what's heating your house
Staten Island heats three different ways, and the right crew depends on which one is in your basement. Thirty seconds here saves a wrong phone call.
The thirty-second diagnosis
Which house is yours?
Radiators or baseboard along the walls?
You have a boiler — steam or hot water — like most of the housing north of the expressway and the pre-war stock everywhere. Banging pipes, cold radiators, and leaking sections all live on the boiler repair page; a dying unit heads to boiler replacement.
Vents or grilles blowing warm air?
That's a furnace and ducts — the standard setup in the post-1964 tract build-out mid-Island and south. Won't-light and short-cycling problems are furnace repair; an aging unit is furnace installation & replacement.
Wall units or a system that also cools?
You're in heat pump territory — mini splits or a ducted heat pump — the newest of the three and the one Con Edison pays rebates on.
